SCTE Certification Descriptions
Descriptions of each certification program:
SCTE — Broadband Premises Specialist:
Certifies a technician's proficiency in the various aspects of service at subscribers' premises. All aspects of the network from distribution tap to the terminating device are part of this curriculum. Specifics include:
  Installation—exterior and interior wiring, connectorization and building construction;
  Drop Equipment—drop cable, passives, actives, security devices and NIDs
  Customer Premises—customer service and premises devices;
  Safety—climbing, vehicle, tools, environment;
  Troubleshooting/Repair—test equipment, CATV systems, troubleshooting techniques.
Once you've mastered the core curriculum for BPS, you can choose to pursue one or more specialized endorsements to demonstrate your advanced knowledge of video, voice and/or data.

SCTE — Broadband Premises Specialist, Video Endorsement:
Video Endorsement—Certifying your knowledge of digital and analog video. Prerequisite for this endorsement is Broadband Premises Specialist certification.

SCTE — Broadband Premises Specialist, Voice Endorsement:
Voice Endorsement—Certifying your knowledge of switched telephony and IP telephony. Prerequisite for this endorsement is Broadband Premises Specialist certification.

SCTE — Broadband Premises Specialist, Data Endorsement:
Data Endorsement—Certifying your knowledge of high-speed data and in-home networking. Prerequisite for this endorsement is Broadband Premises Specialist certification.

SCTE — Broadband Distribution Specialist:
Certifies proficiency in the subject matter related to the RF distribution of signals. All aspects of the network from the optical node to the distribution tap are included in this certification curriculum. Specifics include:
  System Architectures—design principles and HFC architectures;
  Distribution Components—actives, passives and coaxial cable;
  Signal Types—analog, modulation schemes, frequency spectrum and impairments;
  Maintenance and Troubleshooting—sweeping, FCC Rules, return path, test equipment,
    status monitoring and troubleshooting techniques;
  Safety and Construction—personal protective equipment, ladders, pole climbing,
    equipment and vehicle operation.
Testing: one 50 question multiple choice exam
SCTE — Broadband Transport Specialist:
Certifies proficiency in the transport of signals, including aspects of the network from the headend to the hub and from the hub to the optical node. Specifics include:
  Fundamentals of Optics—lightwave theory;
  Transport Systems—SONET, WDM, CWDM and DWDM;
  Test and Maintenance of Transport Systems—impairments, tests, measurements, restoration
     and performance metrics;
  Optical Equipment—transmitters, light sources, receivers, detectors, splicing and connectorization;
  Construction—practices, considerations and safety.

SCTE — Broadband Telecom Center Specialist:
Certifies proficiency in the reception and processing of signals, including installation, maintenance and repair of signal processing equipment. Specifics include:
  Signal Processing Equipment—off-air, satellite, microwave and alternative sources
    (I.F., fiber drop-off, return, commercial insertion);
  Signal Protection Schemes—sync suppression, video inversion and traps;
  Baseband Signals—video, data and audio;
  Maintenance, Tests and Measurements—FCC rules, FCC proof of performance tests,
     test equipment, preventive maintenance and resolving signal quality problems;
  Facilities—physical requirements, operational planning, frequency plans, EAS and
     commercial insertion.
Once you've mastered the core curriculum for BTCS, you can choose to also pursue specialized endorsements to demonstrate your advanced knowledge of video, voice and/or data.
